Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery information

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) office supports the research needs of the current faculty, students, and staff through its Document Delivery services and retrieval of materials from other libraries. A single web application, ILLiad, is used to submit requests for either type of service.

Turnaround times for borrowed items vary widely. While electronically delivered materials from other libraries may arrive very quickly, researchers should allow 10-15 days for books and other loanables, and 5-10 days for article copies.

Faculty and Extended Education students should read more about Document Delivery services. Students who infrequently visit campus may also use this service. Faculty requesting delivery of WWU materials can usually expect delivery within 2 working days (if they are available). Click here for a list of Frequently Asked Questions about ILL.

Borrowing Limitations and Responsibilities

Please use ILL responsibly so we can continue to offer this valuable service without charging our users (each request costs the Library about $30.00). To help reduce costs, Undergraduate users are limited to six active ILL requests(except Extended Ed. students). The Reference and Information staff can assist undergraduates with identifying suitable WWU Library research resources. Alumni, inactive students, Community Card holders, and others unaffiliated with WWU should try their local library for ILL services.

Some articles can be viewed as PDFs online. Your computer must be capable of reading PDFs (a free reader is available at http://www.adobe.com) and you must select "yes" in the Electronic Delivery field when registering for ILLiad. You will be send at e-mail message as soon as the file can be viewed or downloaded through your ILLiad account. PDFs are deleted automatically after 30 days.

The label attached to each book contains the item's due date and other important information needed to reconcile your ILLiad record. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE ILLiad LABELS FROM BOOKS, VIDEOS, OR OTHER LOANABLES!

Renewals, Overdues and Fines

Borrowing users are responsible for the care and timely return of all loaned materials, and due dates can range from a few days to several weeks. Any borrowed items in poor condition may result in a replacement fee which will be added to your library record.

A single, conditional 21 day renewal can be requested 4 days before the due date (but not after). If the lending library does not grant the renewal request we will contact you immediately by e-mail. Non-renewable items are indicated by a red message on the ILLiad label just below the due date. To renew items, click the "View and Renew Checked Out Items" button after logging into ILLiad. Important Copyright Information

WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
